I started on the path of helping others in 1995 when I met a young man named “Boy” who was deaf without speech. Being a great talker myself, I couldn't get this young man out of my mind, the thought of living in a silent world upset me to such a degree, I decided to embark on a course of sign language. After a year's course I was excited at the prospect of having good “chat” with Boy, but was very surprised to learn that Boy couldn't sign!! Still, it was a great course that taught me a lot about deaf awareness and I thoroughly enjoyed the signing.
This course gave me a taster in helping others and my thirst for knowledge in this field was awakened. The field being absolutely huge of course and my dilemma then was – where to go next?
My eldest daughter and I decided to join the Red Cross. We became volunteers at the Plympton Branch in Plymouth, Devon and learned first aid. We were walking home one day when we saw a man lying across the pavement with his head in the gutter. We grabbed hold of each others arms reciting all of the things we had learned as we were approaching this poor man. Bending down and slightly shaking him and at the same time shouting, “hello, can you hear me”, the man looked up at us and said; “yes, I can, I have dropped my keys down the drain and I am trying to fish them out”!
The thing is with this kind of study, is that once you start, the learning is endless. There are so many wonderful, interesting and fulfilling subjects to choose from. For me, healing came first and then the body work – massage, reflexology. Not being content with that, I attended as many post graduate courses and workshops that I could, adding to my skills and knowledge.
I think the Traditional Chinese Acupuncture was the ultimate for me and the study in China was one of the most rewarding things I have done in my life. If you look in the photo album, I have put a few photos in there of my trip.
I want to thank my husband and my four children for being so patient and supportive over the years. Without their patience and support, I would not have been able to study to the extent I have or attend the many workshops and courses I did. Allowing me the freedom to follow my dream, they have helped me to create a career I love with a passion. |
